Around 50% of engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh faces closure

Around 50% of engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh faces closure, after the end of EAMCET 2013 counselling. Over 2 lakh engineering seats are left vacant during the academic session 2013-14. On Friday, EAMCET 2013 counselling came to an end. Around 1.27 lakh candidates out of 2.17 lakh, are qualified for EAMCET. Andhra Pradesh government had conducted the EAMCET 2013 engineering courses counselling process on Aug 19, 2013, inspite of seemandhra protest. A total of 3.38 lakh engineering seats are available for admissions across the state. Of which 2.37 lakh seats are government seats and 1.01 lakh seats are management seats. According to the reports, only 61,000 students from the Telangana region have attended for counselling for admissions to 313 engineering colleges. Around 1.65 lakh engineering seats are available for admissions in this region. While Andhra region has 1.01 lakh seats in 201 colleges, and the Rayalaseema region has 58,290 seats in 118 engineering colleges. Just 61,200 students turned up for certificate verification from these regions. In 2012, around 180 engineering colleges in andhra pradesh had closed down. "Some colleges where just a handful of students take admission through counselling are expected to shift their students to other colleges for classroom lessons. Meanwhile, these colleges will remain shut to avoid payment of salaries to its teaching and non-teaching staff," said a management head on condition of anonymity
